Following on from the success of last year’s inaugural Day of Action for Herefordshire’s rivers and wetlands, we present Rivers, Roots and Resilience - A Day of Climate Action across Herefordshire and the Wye Valley on Saturday 6th September.
Throughout the day, community groups and organisations will be running activities to celebrate wildlife, explore our rivers and landscapes, raise awareness of climate change, and take local action for a more sustainable future.
The event has been coordinated by Herefordshire Wildlife Trust and the Wye Valley National Landscape as part of their Wye Adapt to Climate Change project, with thanks to funding from the National Lottery Community Fund
All activities are free to take part in and most are family-friendly.
Many of the activities demonstrate practical actions which people can do in their local area such as riverfly surveying – a method to monitor water quality of streams and rivers. Find out what’s involved and maybe be inspired to start a survey group on your local brook!
There are also a number of tours taking place during the day which showcase actions others are taking such as at Dôl-Wen, an off-grid smallholding near Tintern, and at Ballingham Court where participants can enjoy a guided walk through a beautiful Herefordshire farm to uncover nature-friendly farming on the banks of the River Wye.
Some events look at some of our smallest species – our moth breakfasts at Marden and Llangrove – while, at the other end of the scale, Chepstow Museum is holding a Big Fish exhibition!
At Bartonsham Meadows in Hereford, family activities include WildPlay, river surveys, coracle displays and a nature trail while over in Hereford Town Hall, Herefordshire Council will be presenting talks and discussion on Environmental Careers in Herefordshire.
There will also be free unlimited travel on bus routes 65 and 69 throughout the day – forming a circular journey between Chepstow and Monmouth through the stunning Wye Valley.
Herefordshire Wildlife Trust’s Holly Thompson says:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for people to discover some of the amazing projects and activities that are in action across Herefordshire and the Wye Valley. From farmers to community groups, crafters to scientists, people across our region are tackling the climate and biodiversity crises with passion and ingenuity.”
Holly Williams of the Wye Valley National Landscape says:
“We plan for the day to be celebratory but also a call to action – showcasing some of the ways people can connect more with the landscapes in which we live and get involved in activities which contribute to our care of the living word.”
