Herefordshire Wildlife Trust secures funding for training in local communities

Herefordshire Wildlife Trust has joined a £1.7 National Lottery funded programme to build skills and support locals into work.
The scheme will be managed by charity Landau, who are already successfully delivering a similar project in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin. The programme is funded by the European Social Fund and the National Lottery, through the Big Lottery Fund, as part of their wider Building Better Opportunities programme.

Training will be delivered through six-week placements, and includes orchard management, wildlife conservation management, environmental education and retail training with Herefordshire Wildlife Trust. Each person enrolled will have a dedicated mentor to support their progress.

Applications for placements are now open. Places are available to people of all ages who are not currently in work, who are looking to gain the skills and experience to get closer to employment.

Herefordshire Wildlife Trust’s Laurence Green, who will be running the orchard management training commented: “This is a great opportunity for us to give some extra support to those who are struggling to get into work. Working outside, productively, in nature is proven to boost people’s wellbeing and confidence and this programme will also be teaching practical skills they can hopefully use in future employment.”

The Building Better Opportunities programme in Herefordshire is funded by the Big Lottery and the European Social Fund as part of the 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme in England to support projects in England that tackle poverty and promote social inclusion.
