An update on the Herefordshire black poplar project

An update on the Herefordshire black poplar project

An update from project coordinator Tony Norman

During the year we have been contacted by over 100 people from all over the country - but mostly Herefordshire.

400 native black poplars, plants and truncheons, have been distributed to around 50 parishes in Herefordshire and beyond while many more have been distributed in the south of the county (with thanks to Robin Nicol.)

Remedial work has been done to extend the life of an important ancient black polar in Llangaron.

Four talks on the native black poplar have been given.

Ten more samples have been sent away to Forest Research for DNA analysis and the Herefordshire collection of the nine clones has been set up at Herefordshire Wildlife Trust's Oak Tree Farm Nature Reserve in the Lugg Valley.

Contact has been made with the National Collection (85 clones -so far) being established at National Trust Killerton in Devon and we have given them a supply of our clones.
