Golden Rain Tree planted at Queenswood Arboretum in honour of the Queen’s Jubilee.
The Queenswood Coronation Fund Trustees have planted a tree to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Queenswood Country Park & Arboretum - 69 years after the first trees were planted in the arboretum there to commemorate the Queens’s Coronation in 1953.
The tree that was chosen to mark the occasion is a Golden Rain Tree (Koelreuteria paniculata), a native of China and Taiwan, and named for the carpet of yellow petals that flitter to the ground around it in summer. The tree was selected by the Trustees for its special beauty and it has been planted in a prominent spot at the end of Lime Avenue, the main path taken by visitors into the Arboretum.
The planting of the Arboretum at Queenswood began in 1953 to mark the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. It was funded by a public appeal via ‘The Queenswood Coronation Fund’ launched by Sir Richard Cotterell. The site’s managing partners, Herefordshire Wildlife Trust and New Leaf Sustainable Development continue to work closely with the Coronation Fund committee today and it continues to be an important support to the Arboretum.
