50th Anniversary Events

50th AnniversaryTo celebrate its 50 years of conserving and protecting Herefordshire’s wildlife and habitats, Herefordshire Nature Trust is organising a series of events which will include a wide range of activities to interest and involve people of all ages who care about the county’s natural beauty and rich wildlife.

 Hergest Croft Spring Flower Fair
Monday 7th May, 10.30am – 5.30pm   

Venue: Hergest Croft Gardens, Kington, Herefordshire, HR5 3EG

The Trust is the official beneficiary of a charity garden auction being held at Hergest Croft’s renowned annual Spring Flower Fair, courtesy of the Trust’s Vice Present Lawrence Banks.

The auction will start at 12 noon and include some fabulous items such as tickets to the Chelsea Flower Show, a days’ fishing on the river Monnow and some prized plants. 

There will be a wide range of stalls selling unusual plants, crafts and produce.  Other activities include a guided walk around the gardens, a raffle, and childrens’ craft activities run by the Herefordshire Nature Trust’s Wildplay team.  Refreshments will also be available from the tea room.

Admission £6.00. Children free.

Great Doward Spring Flower Walk
Saturday 19th May, 2.00pm

To commemorate the acquisition of the Trust’s first nature reserve, Woodside, there will be a guided walk to look at spring flowers and butterflies in Woodside and Miner’s Rest Nature Reserve. Meet at 2pm at the Forestry Commission carpark, grid ref SO 547 156.

A Celebration of Parklands at the Parks
Saturday 26th May, 10.30am – 5.30pm

The day will celebrate the Trust’s most recently acquired nature reserve near Dulas Court and offer the chance to find out about its latest project, the Herefordshire Parklands Project.  There will be opportunities to get ‘hands on’ with the project’s work, by helping to survey the ecology of the parkland, assisting with an archaeological dig of an old ‘midden’ or recording the historic features of the landscape.

Herefordshire Festival of Wildlife
Saturday 11th August, times to be confirmed

Venue:  Herefordshire Nature Trust, Lower House Farm, Ledbury Road, Tupsley, Hereford, HR1 1UT.

The event will be the high point in the Trust’s 50th birthday celebrations and will include a full day of wildlife related activities, demonstrations of traditional country crafts, conservation and wildlife groups, displays, craft stalls, locally grown organic produce and play activities for children. This will be followed by an evening of ceiladh dancing and feasting on locally sourced food and drink.

Open Day at Lower House Farm
8th September

Venue  Herefordshire Nature Trust, Lower House Farm, Ledbury Road, Tupsley, Hereford, HR1 1UT.

Lower House Farm will be hosting an Open Day as part of European Heritage Day and the UK Heritage Open Days scheme.  The event will consist of guided tours around the farm house and a short walk on the Lugg Meadow. This will be a good opportunity to see inside one of Hereford’s most historic buildings. Refreshments will be available.

Wildlife Photography Masterclass and Talk
Saturday 15th September.

Masterclass - 2 to 5 pm; Talk - 7.30 to 9.00pm

Venue: Whitecross High School, Three Elms Road, Hereford, County of Herefordshire HR4 0RN.

Bob Gibbons, the renowned wildlife photographer and author, will run a wildlife photography masterclass and talk in September. Whilst the venue for the masterclass is currently being finalized, the talk will be held at the Whitecross school and will be by ticket only.

Herefordshire Nature Trust’s AGM
Saturday 20th October

The AGM will be a celebration of what the Trust has achieved in the last 50 years as part of its business. There will be a wide variety of displays and short presentations illustrating how we haved worked for wildlife and people in the county. The event will be held in the attractive College Hall at Hereford Cathedral.

Great Doward Fungi Walk
Monday 22nd October

The second Great Doward Walk will take place on 22nd October and will be led by Sheila Spence who will explore the area’s rich fungi flora. More details to follow.

Herefordshire Nature Trust Barbeque
Date to be confirmed

Venue: Herefordshire Nature Trust.

A grand barbeque is planned for early December to thank all of the Trust’s volunteers, past and present, who have contributed so much in so many different ways to the running of the Trust.
