As well as the usual guided walks around the Lugg Meadow looking at the flowering fritillaries and exploring the landscape history and geology of the area there will be other activities for the whole family to get involved in, such as:
- Help count the fritillaries under the expert guidance of the Floodplain Meadows Partnership (see News and Views)
- Bee-witched – bees are the main pollinators of fritillaries, we need to know how they are doing, you can help survey them.
For both these activities training will be given.
It will be a real family event as the WildPlay Rangers will be there throughout the day, running a host of activities such as a WildPlay picnic and Easter Egg Hunt, which will inevitably involve getting down and dirty!
Try your hand at bodging – or greenwood working – under the expert guidance of Turnham Green (aka Lewis Goldwater), and find out more about Trust projects. As ever there will be refreshments on sale including coffee and biscuits, and stalls selling home made cakes and buns, books, plants, Trust goods and a raffle.
The guided walks start at 10.30am and will be followed by others during the day. Cost: £2.00 adults, children free.
> Click here for more information about Lugg Meadow nature reserve.
NB: Because of the late flowering of the fritillaries we have changed the Fritillary event date from 13th April to 27th April.

Wildlife friendly garden
SATURDAY and SUNDAY 15th & 16th JUNE
Guy and Sue of The Nest, Moreton Eye, HR6 0DP, map reference SO 501 641, are opening their garden for the Trust for the third time this summer, on Saturday and Sunday 15th & 16th June 2013, from 2pm till 5pm.
The Nest is a 16th century yeoman’s house (not open), surrounded by one acre of formal gardens. These contain many habitats to encourage a large diversity of wildlife to visit, stay and breed. Over 40 bird species regularly come to feed, up to 20 types of butterfly have been recorded in one year, and in the pond breed frogs, common and great crested newts. The summer garden will be at its best in June, next to the stumpery and ditch with 60 varieties of ferns. The scree slope and rockeries are planted with a variety of alpines. The back garden has apple cordons, soft fruits, and a potager surrounded by box hedges, for growing vegetables. Grey squirrels live in the 120 year old Bramley apple tree.
As well as the structured garden, a three acre wildflower meadow and remnant of the old Stourport to Leominster canal adds fantastic wildlife value. Grass snakes and slowworms breed here, as do frogs and newts. The meadow has never been ploughed, and is botanically very species rich, with several rarities. Guy will lead conducted walks during the afternoons.
Teas will be available, and plants for sale. There is good wheelchair access to most of the garden and field: help is available if needed. We regret no dogs allowed.
Cost: The entrance fee is £3 with children under 12 free.
Location: “The Nest” is 3 miles North of Leominster between the A49 and B4361. Turn off the A49 in Ashton toward Moreton Eye Luston. Driveway is one mile on the left. From the B4361 turn at the Holy Well to Eye Moreton Ashton. After one mile take the first driveway on the right after the Moreton sign.
